Location  Crest Backpack - Day 3

Where:  Carl Lake to Marion Lake Trailhead

I had just finished my breakfast of blueberry pancakes, and Lon and I were indulging in a second cup of coffee, when I notice a coyote on the trail at the end of the lake. As we watched he stopped and started eating huckleberries. I knew from fishing there yesterday that there were some of the best huckleberries around. He proceeded for some time to slurp up the huckleberries, unconcerned with us as I retrieved my camera and took several photos.

The hike from Carl Lake up to the Pacific Crest Trail is about as scenic a trail as you will find in Oregon. We stopped several times to take in the views and take a few photos. Lon also spotted a chipmunk eating huckleberries.

Skirting South Cinder Peak we took the Swallow Lake Trail, stopping for lunch at Swallow Lake, and then the long hot march back to Marion Lake Trailhead, punctuated with rest stops and water breaks.
