Location  Tahkenitch Creek Trail Hike

Where:  Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area

Jeanette and I wanted to squeeze one more hike in this week, and Gregory and Trudy were up for it. I selected the Tahkenitch Creek Trail, which is one of my favorite coast trails. It has a lot to offer with views of the winding creek, sand dunes and piney forest.

Mushrooms were everywhere, and chopped up boletes made me suspect a mushroom class of some kind must have been through before us. We were able to photograph and identify, Purple Coral, Woolycap, and Scaber Hydnum.

Tahkenitch Creek is engaged in a constant battle with sand and forest, as a result the creek is constantly changing course. Trails get changed and bushwhacking is sometimes required to get to the creek. We overcame all the obstacles and had a great lunch break on the creek in the warm sunshine.

We did a little extra exploring on this hike, so ended up with a little over 5 miles for the day.

On the drive home we stopped to look at the dam on Tahkenitch Creek where we were rewarded with the sighting of three playful River Otter and a number of wary salmon.
