Location  Tahkenitch Creek Trail Hike

Where:  Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area

This was an unusual hike in that I started out driving inland to hike at the North Bank Habitat Management Area just north of Roseburg. When I got there it was all cloudy and gloomy with a good number of hunters pick-ups at the trailheads. As I'm not too keen on getting shot at, and I preferred hiking in the sunshine, which I knew from viewing the cams on the Internet that the coast had plenty, I turned around and drove back through Elkton to the coast and bright sunshine.

I was pleased to find the Tahkenitch Creek Trail now open, it had been closed the last time I had attempted to hike it. I found the new bridge complete and a new section of trail on the far side.

Buster and I stopped for a quick bite of lunch atop a sand dune. Luxuriating in the warm sunshine I stripped to my t-shirt, while Buster kept guard.

The mouth of Tahkenitch Creek is always in a state of change in its battle with the ocean, and there is always something different to see. Today I was surprised to find a Great Blue Heron working the shallow waters, successfully snatching up underwater tidbits.
