Merriam-Webster Dictionary says pied means - of two or more colors in blotches. The black blotch in the middle of the bill of the Pied-billed Grebe is almost an instant identifier. The sharp contrast of the black blotch and light colored bill is most intense in the breeding season from February thru September.
