This small woodpecker of California is larger than a Downy Woodpecker but smaller than a Hairy Woodpecker. It is similar in size to a Ladder-backed Woodpecker, and both have a striped pattern on their backs, however Nuttall's have a black shoulder at the top. Nuttall's are found in oak woods, Ladder-backed in the desert. William Gambel, a protege of Thomas Nuttall, named this woodpecker in Nuttall's honor.
