Location  Not-Nasty Rock Hike

Where:  Opal Creek Wilderness

The impetus for this hike began back in August when Jeanette and I were hiking Hawk Mountain and met Don Jenkins. Don has a great love for hiking and in particular, old trails. In the course of our conversation he mentioned that he thought that the Chemeketans where not hiking to the actual Nasty Rock. We agreed that sometime we would hike it together and find out. Now seemed like a good time and with some e-mails with Don we set up this hike in the Little North Fork area on the Nasty Rock Trail.

While getting ready at the trailhead, Bob & Clementina Evans drove up, and we invited them to hike with us. Bob and Clementina have a real interest in mushrooms and we were soon into spotting mushrooms.

For those who have not hiked this trail, it is a steep non-relenting trail, with over 2500 feet of elevation gain in some 2.5 miles to the base of an impressive rock formation. Reaching the base of this rock formation, which I have formerly called Nasty Rock, a cold wind forced us to bundle up and huddle down while we ate our lunch.

I turned on my GPS and was shocked to see that it indicated that Nasty Rock was a mile away! Consulting the map and checking the coordinates I verified that we were actually at the base of a peak merely identified on the map by its elevation, 4618. I have consequently decided to call this rocky peak Not-Nasty Rock.
