Where:  Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area

Buster and Jeanette ready to head out over the dunes

Possibly the hike we enjoy the most at the Oregon Coast is a hike we do starting at the Oregon Dunes Overlook. It's a mixed combination. We start by just striking off cross-country over the dunes. The dunes are constantly changing with the movement of sand, so our route always varies a little. After we get our fill of climbing up and down the dunes we pick up the Tahkenitch Creek Loop Trail, which is marked by posts, and we take that trail to the beach. Then we head north on the beach until we find the Oregon Dunes Overlook Trail. This gives us a loop hike of 4.5 miles with a great amount of diversity.

In the dunes we enjoyed quite a few wildflowers, including Lupine, Yellow Sand Verbena, and Beach Silvertop.

Overhead we got to see an Osprey, a Bald Eagle, and some Turkey Vultures. In the thickets we found Spotted Towhee, White Crowned Sparrows. On the beach we saw Western Sandpipers, a pair of Semipalmated Plovers, and of course Western Gulls too common to mention.
