Location  Eagle Rock Nature Trail Hike

Where:  El Chorro Regional Park, California

Its been some time since I have posted to the Trip Journal, it seems that we have mostly been taking bird walks, which in my opinion is not the same thing as a hike, bird walks amount to mostly wondering aimlessly and standing around, it certainly does not provide the exertion of a hike to get your heart rate going. So, I admonished my wife Jeanette, no birding, --- we need to get in a real hike. We walked about a mile from where we are staying in the campground, through the day-use-area, to where the trail begins it's climb.

The Eagle Rock Nature Trail climbs through wonderful old overhanging Coastal Live Oaks before breaking out into the open. At a rocky knoll we stopped to examine these bowl shaped holes left by the Chumash natives who ground oak acorns into meal using a pestle and these morta holes.

The trail continues out in the open to the rock out cropping, Eagle Rock. From there you have a great vista of the surrounding area, even to the ocean and Morro Rock. We were somewhat surprised to discover that the trail ends here at the rock, and does not go to the actual summit of this unnamed hill. The reason being the rest of the hill is the property of the military post Camp San Luis Obispo.

We returned via the Oak Woodland Trail, and once again succumbed to birding, watching sparrows, warblers, and Juncos. However, we did get in four and a half miles.
