Location  Sara Park Trails Explore

Where:  Sara Park - Lake Havasu, Arizona

We enjoyed hiking at Sara Park so much yesterday that we decided to hike there again today. We could tell that there were a lot of other trails, so we were interested in exploring some more. The biggest problem is that there are virtually no signs to identify the trails. However we struck gold when we arrived at the trailhead, someone had left stacks of maps and directions (held down with rocks) on a bench. Now we could have some idea of where the trails go.

For a basic plan we were thinking of hiking to the top of Picnic Table Mountain via the Blue Trail. But a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. Because we now had a map of the trails, we decided to save some time and distance and strike out overland and intersect the trail later. We ended up boxed in someplace up on the side of Picnic Table Mountain with no trail in sight. We retreated back down and followed a wash looking for a way out. We ended up in a particularly picturesque red rock canyon, which after consulting our map we decided was the Red Rock Grotto.

We continued down through the grotto and on to the main trail, the Yellow Trail, and followed it to the trail we should have originally taken to Picnic Table Mountain. It was a little too late to hike up to the picnic table now, but we hike a ways to see its direction. A trail shown on the map as the Rock Lizard catches our attention and we take it and are surprised to find this lizard made out of rocks.

For a route back to the car we take combination of trails around the Low Ridge and back on the Gate Trail. There are well over a dozen trails in Sara Park and we will be back to explore some more. It is such a large hiking resource and only about a half-hour drive from where we are staying at Buckskin Mountain State Park.
