Location  Hawk Mountain Hike

Where:  Mt Hood National Forest

Attempting to collect more hikes per my BACKPACKER agreement I decided on Hawk Mountain. It's a relatively short but interesting hike that I felt would make a straightforward GPS route. The interesting attraction here is the existence of the original fire lookout cabin. This cabin was built in 1936 for the fire lookout person to stay in when he was not up in the lookout tower. My two most dependable sidekicks both had dentist appointments for the day, so I ventured out on my own.

Temporary Trailhead ULT-564 sign

The temporary trailhead sign read, ULT-564. That means that trail number 564, the Rho Ridge Trail, has been designated an Urban Link Trail. It's not in any wilderness, so I guess I shouldn't have been surprised by the evidence left by gas powered quads, but I was, and I realized once again, that yes we do need wilderness regulations.

a friendly Douglas Squirrel

I did manage to have a little conversation with a Douglas squirrel, but it was pretty much one sided with me doing all the talking.

working with my BLACKBERRY

At the summit after admiring the view of Mt Jefferson, I opened up the cabin and sat in the shade of the front porch to check my e-mail and reply, check over my GPS waypoints, attempt to download a map, and setup a return track. Just another day at the office.
