Location  Coast Horse Trails Hike

Where:  Siuslaw National Forest

Some time ago I received a tip from Jennifer Travers, a regular contributor to Cascade Ramblings, that the Coast Horse Trails just North of Florence, where good hiking trails and not much used by horses. I made a mental note and finally today got a chance to explore some of them. Accompanying me were 5 cooperative hikers from Elkton, Janet Schaller, Graham & Jane Wood, Jeanette Scott, and Eddie Harrod.

We drove to the Dry Lake Trailhead, and from there took the Princess Tasha Trail that switch-backed up the side of Cape Mountain and out to Olson View Point.

From the viewpoint we took the Scurvy Ridge Trail out to the Hitsi replica, and then on to the Horse Creek Campground where we enjoyed lunch with a picnic table and many friendly gray jays.

Retracing out route back on the Scurvy Ridge and Princess Tasha Trails we took a side trip up to the summit of Cape Mountain to the old lookout site, and then back down to the Dry Lake Trailhead. These are all indeed good trails for hikers. We saw absolutely no horse signs, a few mountain bike tracks, and only two other hikers.
