Location North Fork Smith River Trail Hike |
Where: Siuslaw National Forest |
This started out as a scouting trip for a hike Jeanette and I will be leading in a couple of weeks for the Friends of the Umpqua Hiking Club. But, like a lot of things that happen in Elkton, we were soon joined by five of our friends, who may or may not have known what they were getting into.

beginning of the trail We left a car at the lower end of the North Fork Smith River Trailhead and then drove on up to the Kentucky Falls Trailhead, where we began our trip by hiking down to the two Kentucky Falls.
Lower Kentucky Falls After viewing and photographing Lower Kentucky Falls we continued down river on the North Fork Smith River Trail. This is a very remote section of trail of 6 1/2 miles that leads through a majestically forested deep canyon.

end of the trail The trail grew longer as the day progressed, and at a bridge with about 3 miles to go, our two fastest hikers took off to make the car shuttle to retrieve our other car. |
