Location Oregon Dunes Overlook Hike |
Where: Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area |
A break in the weather after several weeks of solid rain was all we needed to go hiking. For winter hikes it's hard to beat the Oregon Coast, and for this hike I choose to start at the Oregon Dunes Overlook. It's a favorite area because of the variation from sand dunes, to stream and to ocean beaches.

Bust & Jeanette at a sand sculpter We were surprised to see the major changes that have come about since the recent storms. Thousands of tons of sand have been rearranged changing the landscape. Radical sculpting of the sand by the wind has left fascinating forms.

lunch at Tahkenitch Creek From the upper viewing deck we took off cross-country almost due south over the dunes as far as Tahkenitch Creek where we stopped for a lunch break. From there we picked up the Tahkenitch Creek Loop Trail and took it to the beach. On the beach we hiked north, picking up the return trail to the parking lot.

a "T-shirt day" In all, we considered it a very successful day, I mean to be able to have a 'T-shirt day' hike in the middle of January, it doesn't get much better.
Statistics of the day: Distance: 4.6 miles Climb: 460 feet Time: 3:15 hours |
