Location  Metolius River Backpack - Day 2

Where:  Deschutes National Forest

I expected to get a later start, but Ken is up with a fire going by 6:00, so we all get up and eat. Peggy is the slowest, but still we are out of camp an hour earlier than I had planned.

It's an excellent hike down the river and we arrive at Wizard Falls Hatchery much earlier than I had planned. After visiting and looking around for half an hour we decide on first lunch. Jim Harvey tried to bait an Eagle with a dead Brookie, but no luck today. We pull out and break again at a nice bend just beyond The Nature Conservancy property.

At the big bend, right across from Allen Springs Campground I see a small bird ht the dirt and then fly with its victim to a tree. We think it to be a Saw-whet, a small owl. (At home I identify it as a Northern Pigmy Owl.)

We hike on down past Bridge 99 and end up camping at the same campsite as last year, across the river and down below Candle Creek Campground.
