Location  Marion Lake Fishing

Where:  Willamette National Forest

When Jeanette's brother Bill said he wanted to go fishing I thought Marion Lake would be a good choice for us. In normal years it's best to get there earlier, but with so much snow this year, access is much later to all the lakes in the Cascades.

We found the trail free of snow until the Marion Lake Trail forks above Lake Ann. There we encountered some snowdrifts still coving the trail, but they were relatively easy to walk over. The air temperature was perfect for us to enjoy the day, and the Marion Lake was still clear, free of the bloom that normally comes in July.

Bill caught this nice 16 ½ inch Rainbow Trout using a bobber and worms. After lunch he happened to break his fishing pole, but was able to make a temporary repair using his belt and some sticks, enabling him to catch another fish, a 9-inch Brook Trout. When we quit fishing, Bill then had to disassemble his repair job to be able to use his belt to keep his pants up so that we could hike back to his pick-up.

In preparing for this trip I had checked out the Current Conditions Report on the Internet from the Detroit Ranger District. They had reported that the bridge over Marion Creek at the outlet of Marion Lake was destroyed by high water flows this winter----sure enough it was true.
